Phenoxymethylpenicillin K
Indications/Uses
Penicillin-susceptible organism diseases eg, angina tonsillaris, bacterial bronchitis, acute otitis media & sinusitis, scarlet fever, furuncles, abscesses. Supportive therapy in bacterial pneumonia. Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever recurrences, polyarthritis, bacterial endocarditis, glomerulonephritis after tonsillectomy; stomatology infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 125-500 mg every 6-8 hr. Max: 7.2 g daily. Continuous prophylaxis of strep infections in patient w/ history of rheumatic heart disease &/or chorea 125-250 mg every 12 hr. Infant & childn up to 12 yr 2.5-9.3 mg/kg every 4 hr or 3.75-14 mg/kg every 6 hr or 5-18.7 mg/kg every 8 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillin &/or cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Glycosuria. Not to be used w/ bacteriostatic antibiotics. Concomitant use w/ antiphlogistics, antirheumatics & antipyretics. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Competitive inhibition of excretion w/ antiphlogistics, antirheumatics & antipyretics. Inhibited serum binding w/ aspirin, sulphamethoxypyridazine & sulphaethidole. Diminished antibacterial action w/ chloroquine phosphate.
